So, if a picture is not watermarked, am I correct in thinking that you can pretty much edit it and make it your own?

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but if you're referring to images on this site, every last pixel is copyright and so no you can't edit it and make it your own. This is what our lawyer is for.

If you're talking about pictures on the net in general, sure. You better hope the license lets you 'make it your own' or you might get a nasty letter from someone else's lawyer. :)

A watermark is just an extra way for people to ensure that others do not steal their work. It does not mean that any image without a water mark can be taken and modified. Most sites have copy righted all their information, so if you want to change an image, it is best to ask first.

Even if watermarking was an indication of copyrighting, I'd say that it wouldn't allow for someone getting a legitimately licensed image and distributing or publishing it without the watermark.

eeek ! nooo !!
A photo, drawing, illustration, design, film, font, etc. is copyrighted the same minute as it is created!
The creator doesn't have to do anything for it. You can't use any image you find on the internet, unless it says so, or you asked permission.

Because I like disagreeing with everyone, yes, trick-r-treat, you can edit any picture you find online and make it your own. But just for non-commercial use.

Yes, if it is not watermarked , count it yours. They are supost to watermark it to keep it theres, theres no way you can print it unless it has that mark on it. Of course if you just cut it off after. Still, the person that watermarked it , if they see it somewhere else they can say you stoll it and they have proof.

I will be watermarking everything now! I don't like the idea of others makings something I initially created their own without my permission.

Truly, copyright means very little now that the internet exists. The only way you can really protect your stuff is by not posting it about the place unless you are willing to take chances.

As Flutes said, we can bypass copyright laws if we use the images for personal reasons in our home, offices, or desktops. But if we will use them in our sites, even in edited form, and the copyright owner recognizes recognizes them as his own, I think there are still legal ramification to that. For one, you could be forced to take down that image.

It's only yours IF THEY SAY SO. If you got it from a "Free" section on a website, yes, it belongs to you. But if you got it from a preview anywhere, IT IS NOT YOURS THEREFORE YOU SHOULD NOT TOUCH IT.

I disagree somewhat here. There are ways around web tools that supposedly stop you from taking images from a web page. Once you have an image that is newly online, it becomes a his word against yours to prove who owns it. Plus, who amongst us really has the money to pursue legal recourse?

I certainly don't.

What if you fetch the picture from a site that is sayign they own it and is giving it to you to do whatever you want to dowith it. Then later someone knocks on y our door and says you have violated thecopyright law, because the site cannot, or doesnt have rights, to givethe picture away.

Where do you stand then?
