Hello everyone,

Can anyone clarify the term "compression level" for me? How does it affect the picture size? Does it increase the clarity of picture?

The compression is how the camera compresses the JPEG image to save space after taking a shot (Note: there is no compression setting with RAW). The higher the compression, the more quality that is lost (but less space is utilized).
Honestly, if you want to get the best quality prints from your camera you should shoot in RAW mode. If you are willing to give up some quality, than shoot in JPEG/superfine mode. If you are willing to give up more quality than shoot in JPEG/fine mode.
Clarity degrades therefore with increase in compression levels.

Hey thansk I understood some of it. Now, is the compression level a characteristic of the camera? Should we ponder upon whether the camera is able to compress while buying a camera?

Indiescribe is absolutely correct, but here I just want to add something useful for you.Compression is the technique by which the superfluous or unrequired data is removed so that it'll need less space for data storage. And increase in compression level will decrease the space requirement but definitely there'll be degradation in quality.

Excellent explainations about compression, both Indiescribe and krrish. Compression is usually used for reducing the size of a file and as a result the more compressed a photo is the less clarify/detail there will be
