I have never created a font since the thousand fonts that come with my Photoshop is enough for anything I can imagine.

However, just curious, does anyone have any experience in creating a font? Is it easy? What's the process?

I am also interested in learning how to create my own font. It seems that a lot of companies have their own dedicated font to use in all of their ads/flyers. Is it simply a matter of creating each individual letter and saving it as a special format, or are there special programs just of font creation?

There are many font programs...
Here is an example: http://www.programurl.com/ppfonter-bitmap-font-maker.htm

But it takes a lot of work to make a font. Especially if you want to do it right.... so, normal letters, capital letters, weird letters like: é, á etc.

Just do it in photoshop, you would have to make each letter and then code it into a font file.

I really don't think that it is worth it anymore. There are thousands of free fonts available without me needing to create each individual letter.

Fontifier.com lets you make your own handwriting into a font. Not advisable to people with really ugly handwriting such as yours truly, though.

My handwriting is so terrible my own bank didn't believe me when I signed for something once.. had to go find the bank manager who knew me, and even then they gave me grief.

Mine's so bad, most of the time, I end up not being able to read what I've written myself. Comes convenient when you're like me and you keep making extremely confessional diaries and/or book manuscripts out of any notebook you pick up. I have a problem with compulsive writing.

photoshop is not very good because it's pixel based. And you should be able to change the font size.
You can better use Adobe Illustrator, that's vector based.

There are so many lousy present day fonts out there. I like the older classic fonts. I wonder how much those professional font makers get per year for designing fonts? It is something I would like to try. The word is such a beautiful thing.

I think I will write Adobe and find out where I can get an education on this. I never see courses offered anywhere on how to design a font.

What word? Fontmaker? Guess it does have a bit of a magical ring to it. I was surprised to see an ad for a company online the other day for their professional font making service. I wasn't aware there was such a big market for it.

I want to learn from the pros what is good and bad font design. I don’t want to learn from a program.

There is so much bad font design out there. I don’t want to add to the lousy font design pool. I like the old master of font design like Baskerville and Garamond. I wonder how they decided what constitutes good design.

I'd rather let the great font makers of the world create fonts so that I can use them...lol.

It's not worth creating your font. There are millions of fonts out there and you can practicly find anything that you can think of. Most of them are free and others you can just buy them in packages so they are cheaper.

I think the only time it is worth creating your own font is if you  either get paid for it or if you want to make a small advertisment to yourself by having it bare your personal/company name.

Making good fonts take a lot of time and effort. It's not exactly worth it if you're making a font for "your special piece". It's a totally different thing if you get paid or if it's your own company though.
